Vancouver (AFP) - China's Wang Meng retained her Olympic 500-metre women's short-track speed skating title Wednesday and warned there was more to come as she kicked off her all-conquering bid at the Vancouver Games. The 24-year-old never looked back after leading around the first bend to finish the four-way final in 43.048sec with Canada's birthday girl Marianne St-Gelais second in 43.707. "I felt I could beat her (St-Gelais) at the start. I felt I could go very smooth and I wouldn't have any problems," said Wang. "I have a lot of confidence. I feel my 500m is stronger than it was in Turin." And she admitted: "I slowed down on the last lap." "This is the first gold. The next event is the 1500m," she warned. "I feel that it's my duty to win that. For sure there's a lot of pressure but I'll find the motivation for the other events. "The Olympics is a very exciting time for China. No matter how many Olympics you go to the dream never dies." Wang, who stopped South Korea's gold-medal sweep of four women's Olympic medals in 2006, is also set to race in the 1000m, 1500m and the 3000m relay in Vancouver with great prospects. She took the overall, 500m and 1000m titles at the 2009 world championships a year after sweeping all world titles in the Olympic distances. Wang also won the 1000m silver and the 1500m bronze at the Torino 2006 Olympic Games. Italy's Arianna Fontana finished third in 43.804 and another Canadian Jessica Gregg fourth in 44.204. At last year's worlds, the 24 ...

Chen Zhen (traditional Chinese: 陳真; pinyin: Chén Zhēn) is a fictional Chinese martial artist, often portrayed as a student of Huo Yuanjia. His story is loosely based on the life of Huo Yuanjia's first student, Liu Zhen-Sheng (劉振聲). Chen Zhen was earlier portrayed both by actor Bruce Lee in the film The Chinese Connection (both earlier and later known as Fist of Fury) as well as Jackie Chan in the film New Fist of Fury. In 1982, RTV (now ATV) produced The Fist [1] as a follow-up to to the previous year's highly successful Legendary Fok about Huo Yuanjia. Bruce Liang reprised his role as Chen Zhen, picking up a new storyline after The Legendary Fok. With its big budget and extensive promotion, The Fist was an ambitious effort for RTV at the time, and paid off with viewership ratings approaching 50%, handily beating its TVB contender. This classic RTV drama co-stars Candice Yu, Lau Wai Man, Choi King Fai, and Bill Tung. In this 20 episode series, after avenging his master Fok Yuen Gap's death, Chen Zhen becomes a wanted criminal. With the assistance of the Shanghai mayor, he manages to escape by faking his own death, and moves to Beijing with Fok's son Dung Kok (later the subject of a second sequel [2]) where they live quietly away from the world's eyes. Chen's identity is eventually revealed however when he comes into conflict with Japanese official Sato, putting his life into danger but also igniting his nationalist fervor. While Sato plans his revenge, Chen resolves ...

China's Ad Industry Sprints for the Olympic Finish Line Look Back 2008 The "next big thing" in advertising is half a world away from Madison Avenue. On the eve of the 2008 Olympics, large, vibrant LED displays - many carrying full-motion advertising - are reaching millions of Chinese consumers as they flex billions of dollars worth of newfound spending power. In China's largest cities next month, Beijing pedestrians will watch the Olympic Games on thousands of LED ad panels operated by Hong Kong-based Network CN, Inc., which will provide exclusive Olympics out-of-home coverage on its six-city network. Between events, and daily, these panels will display ads promoting Western brands to the world's largest emerging consumer market. Sprinting ahead of other media, out-of-home advertising in China is expected to grow 28% cumulatively between 2008 and 2012. In China's middle-class demographic segment, incomes are rising by 20% annually, but penetration by such 20th-century media staples as in-home TV spots and newspaper ads lags the US and Europe. Advertisers currently spend only $1 per month per Chinese consumer; only 2% to 3% of the US ad spend. Out-of-home media is helping advertisers to "plug the gap" between China's nascent urban TV audience and the 80% of the Chinese population not yet on the Internet. For example, after the Sichuan earthquake, Network CN management donated time on the company's network to broadcast earthquake news and donation information as a much ...

At 1.1 billion and counting, China has more people than any nation on earth. To fight the threat of economic ruin due to overpopulation, the Chinese government introduced its one-child policy in 1979. Each married couple is permitted just one baby, though rural residents are allowed a second if the first is a girl. But, as the cbc's Tom Kennedy learns nine years into the policy, three-quarters of Chinese couples aren't stopping at one. Broadcast Date: Nov. 25, 1988

The US-China relationship is complicated and is vital for both countries and the world. Where do Senators mccain and Obama stand on US-China trade, security, environmental, and human rights issues? How important has policy toward China been in past elections and in 2008? These are the questions explored in a USC US-China Institute documentary. Taiwan is routinely cited by Chinese as one of the issues most likely to produce conflict between the US and China. The US supplies weapons to Taiwans military, but the American government has firmly opposed any Taiwan declaration of independence. The US calls on the officials on both sides of the strait to work collaboratively towards a peaceful and enduring resolution of Taiwans status. Since the end of US-Taiwan relations, Taiwan has become a thriving democracy. Ma Ying-jeou became president of Taiwan on May 20, 2008 and has pledged to work towards better ties with the mainland. china.usc.edu

At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, questions arose regarding five of the six women on China's gymnastics team. Evidence surfaced which indicated that the Chinese government many have falsified the athletes' passports to pass the girls off as sixteen - the minimum age required for Olympic gymnastic competition. While the International Gymnastic Federation continues its investigation into the allegations, additional evidence has come to light which illustrates China's habitual deceit and manipulation of the truth. That evidence is presented here, translated for the first time into English, so the world can decide. The setting is the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, where Yang Yun, an inexperienced Chinese gymnast won medals & captured hearts by surprisingly competing head-to-head against gymnastics legend, Svetlana Khorkina. Yang Yun's passport said she was sixteen. Yang Yun says she was fourteen. In this interview produced by state-run Chinese television, the truth finally comes forward behind the curtain of manipulation, misinformation, and deception.
