Battle scenes only witnessed in sci-fi movies could soon become reality after the US military tested a new laser weapon. The powerful laser has been successfully used to shoot down four unmanned aircraft in flight. The tests were carried out in May by the US Navy and Raytheon, a weapon manufacturer. In a black-and-white video, reminiscent of early science fiction films, an aircraft flying across the sky is seen suddenly bursting into fire. In the next instant it is plunging into the sea. According to Raytheon the video shows the power of a so-called solid-state laser. The power of Laser Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) is based on a 50 kilowatt beam it produces. The beam is invisible. On the video it can be seen only when it hits its target. The technology uses a tracking system from Raytheon to focus six solid-state lasers simultaneously on the target. The results were revealed on Monday at Farnborough International Air Show. A similar laser has been successfully tested on destroying static mortars and incoming mortar shells over land. The earlier method produced a beam from a chemical reaction. It was too cumbersome to use. Solid-state lasers are considered more practical as they use glass or ceramic material to generate their beam. The Diamonds were a clean-cut white vocal group from Canada that had sixteen hits between 1956 and 1961. The Diamonds credit a black Gospel group from Detroit, The Revelaires, as the major influence on their singing. Several artists used the name The Diamonds but the original group, formed in 1953, consisted of Dave Somerville (Lead / Replaced by Jim Malone in 1961), Phil Levitt (Baritone / Replaced by Mike Douglas in 1957), Ted Kowalski (Tenor / Replaced by Evan Fisher in 1958), and Bill Reed (Bass, who died in 2004. Ivy Jo Hunter (born George Ivy Hunter) was a soul musician and rock and roll pioneer, a songwriter and record producer for the Motown label. Often confused with both blues singer/pianist Ivory Joe Hunter and Motown pianist Joe Hunter (musician) who was leader of the label's houseband The Funk Brothers from 1959 - 1964. Raised in Detroit , Michigan , he is was trained in orchestral music—primarily trumpet and keyboards. After a stint in the United States Army, Hunter began performing as a singer in the proto-soul venues around Detroit , where he was discovered by Motown's first A&R man, William "Mickey" Stevenson. With Stevenson, Hunter became a principal in the Motown Records house band and began to write some of the most significant hits of the early Motown years. Hunter produced and wrote songs for Motown artists like The Marvelettes, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye, for whom he produced the Top 40 hit single "You" in 1968, and The Contours' 1964 hit, Can You Jerk Like Me As a vocalist he recorded a great deal of material with Motown during the sixties including demos of his own compositions, but nothing was released until 1970. In 1970, Motown issued an Ivy Jo single on their soon to be discontinued VIP label entitled 'I Remember When (Dedicated to Beverly )'. The story goes that while the Supremes were enjoying their second of their streak of #1 hits with "Baby Love", Nella was ready to release her cover version of the Supremes future #1. Its a surprisingly competent performance by musicians and vocalist. Now I can see why Motown rush released and promoted the Supremes version, they might have lost sales. Both songs entered the chart the week of 11/14/1964, Dodds at #87, the Supremes at #66. Dodds peaked at #74 two weeks after release and was off the chart the following week. You be the judge! I like this version but Motown's is lusher and more fully produced, however the plaintive sound of her voice complements the sparer instrumentation. Thought it was time to dig up another 60's obscure dance song.

The Saints jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the second as Jason Cooper led off with a single to right. With one out Brent Krause doubled him home. With two outs Josh Petersen knocked home Krause, but that would be the last of the highlights for the Saints offense.
